October 23rd, 2009

Silverwood’s new Environmental Science program fits seamlessly within a greater school culture that encourages creativity, values hands-on learning experiences and instills respect for ourselves, each other and the planet. In this course, grades 1-6 will spend their class time investigating Silverwood’s eighteen acres of forests, fields, ponds and gardens to joyfully explore and build investment in the natural world. Primary curricular topics include exploring the five senses, animal adaptations, habitats and ecosystems, food webs and gardening. Intermediate topics include journaling, growing plants and “buying local,” building compost, recycling and conducting watershed studies. Senior topics include garden mapping and designing bed layout, local and global food systems, waste reduction, environmental literacy, perspectives on land use, resource consumption and trends in alternative energy.
